After living and working on three continents, my family has settled down in the town where I was born. I hope we'll be here awhile. I'm too tired to move.

About CariOkie
After living and working on three continents, my family has settled down in the town where I was born. I hope we'll be here awhile. I'm too tired to move.
Writing is a creative outlet for me and blogging is a perfect forum 'cause I can do it in short bites here and there. This method does not, however, make for ground breaking, earth shattering, life altering literature. I write assuming only my mother, sister, brother and husband will read it and am always pleasantly surprised when others who are not obligated by blood or marriage stop by and are not judgey.
This blog is about life as a Generation Joneser, empty-nester, middle aged woman living in middle America. Scintillating stuff, I know. Don't judge.
Women and Work
Following are recent posts about women and work. Because I'm a woman...and... I work. Sorry. I don't have a male perspective - I just write from what I know.

Why Women Work
Over the last week or so I’ve been observing women at work as I go about my usual life. Namely women of a certain age. Namely my age. Women approaching fifty. Women born into what is now known as Generation Jones.
One day last week I fell through the rabbit hole. I walked off the street in a small Oklahoma town into the county courthouse and straight into the seventies. Click to read the full article.

Women At Work - Same Song, Second Verse
Remember Lilly Ledbetter? At age 41 she took a job as a manager at Goodyear Tire and Rubber and worked there until her retirement 20 years later. When she retired she was the only woman in her position – the rest being men, of course. Near the close of her tenure someone slipped her an anonymous note telling her she was making significantly less in salary than her male counterparts. Ms. Ledbetter took the company to court, where a jury found in her favor.
The facts were pretty clear – the only factor differentiating her and her fellow managers was her gender. Here’s the kicker though. Goodyear appealed and the U.S. Supreme court ruled in their favor. Apparently, according to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Ms. Ledbetter was required to file a claim no less than 180 days after the first time she experienced discrimination. Um, really?

Women At Work - Third Times A Charm
I have to say, one of the best things about having grown children and a somewhat empty nest is that my husband and I don’t have to sort out who will be taking care of our children while we work. With 58 percent of children under six having all parents in the workforce, it’s a problem common to many. Click to read the full article.
