I didn't see THAT coming

Wow! Is it the new year already? I did absolutely nothing to celebrate the new year. Is that lame? OK, it's lame.

Welcome to a new decade. Or is it the end of the old decade? I'm not quite sure. What I do know is that it's a new year and a fresh start. That's what I love about the turn of the year. There's something about it that makes one want to take stock of one's life and tweak it a bit where needed.

So much goes on in my head and my life that I just don't get written down. Somewhere in the midst of our moving and adjusting our life to a new normal I've gotten out of the habit of writing. I haven't found a rhythm for a daily routing yet in this new house. Often I feel like I'm just visiting. So writing more and settling in are two things high on my list for the new year.

Don't even talk to me about making some resolution to lose weight or exercise more. While both of those things are on my "must do" list, I'm just not going to force myself into a corner with that kind of New Year's resolution. I do plan to take this year's goals a little more seriously than I did last year, but that won't be hard to do. I'm gonna have to think, to consider the few things important enough to use up some of my limited energy, time and resources.

In the mean time, I've made a few changes to this blog. Nothing new there! Hope you have a fabulous new year.

Sanity is not all it's cracked up to be

You know the definition of insanity, right? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Supposedly Einstein said that. All the pithy little quotes seem to be attributed to either Einstein or Abraham Lincoln. Did they really have time to sit around thinking up pithy little quotes and writing them down so future generations could google them? Maybe they did. Maybe I'm just way past cynical.

Another blogger reminded me of what Craig Groeschel said on Sunday.

If you want what you once had, do what you once did.

He was applying it to relationships, but I think it works well in many areas of life. Also the antithesis of that thought, which is:

If you want what you've never had, do what you've never done.
I'm going to have to think about those for a while. I can come up with many, many examples of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Truthfully, if I want what I once had, or what I've never had, I would have to pause long enough to think thoughts deeper than whether The Bachelor will choose Molly or Melissa, or if I should paint the kitchen walls off white or pale blue, or if my house will ever be fully clean again. I'm going to have to work on that.

My turn

I feel compelled to join the crowd of bloggers sharing their New Year's resolutions. Here are a few of mine.
  1. Eat chocolate
  2. Watch a lot of reality TV
  3. Read blogs daily
  4. Use the phrase "I'm just sayin" at least once a month in a blog post
  5. Take pictures of Mark and the dogs
  6. Support Tessa through a crisis moment
  7. Help Angela find her keys
  8. Wax my chin, lip and brow
  9. Make lists
  10. Cross things off lists
  11. Use less toilet paper
  12. Change my shampoo brand
Mmm. Think that's about it. I'm just sayin.
